Grace, when you stood up on the bench to make your toast, I saw you just like the little girl you used to be. what I really saw was you in that picture from Richland, when Trish visited and we met Mark the first time. she’s in the background and you’re wearing that little white sweater, sitting on the riverbank with your mouth wide open and your hand back, shouting and throwing bread at the ducks.
and now look at you. so beauteous. and still kind of shouty sometimes.

here’s what we got when we gave our wedding party almost complete freedom with their outfits. we told both bridesmaids and groomsmen to wear something in either purple or grey, and asked the men to wear black or grey pants. the ladies all chose various shades of lilac, lavender, and violet, and the men all chose greys. we bought purple ties for the men and my mom and siblings and I made hair combs for the ladies, which helped to further tie the color scheme together.

I think I have the most beautiful friends in the world.

Song, by Leonard Cohen

I almost went to bed
without remembering
the four white violets
I put in the button-hole
of your green sweater

and how I kissed you then
and you kissed me
shy as though I’d
never been your lover

one wedding down!

I’m two days back from the honeymoon and already getting so excited for Grace’s wedding. I feel old, wise, and energized. I’m going to bridesmaid the hell out of your wedding, seastar.

we should have some pictures and reports filtering in eventually, but in the meantime I’ll just leave the poem Katie read in the ceremony, Song by Leonard Cohen.

apsies:

Another photo from Chelsea’s wedding. This one of the mother and grandmother of the bride with Chelsea. I’m most struck by the fact that Dorothy Rodham, Hillary’s mom, is 91!

Hillary is an inspiration for, among other things, fabulous mother-of-the-bride hair. Mom, are you paying attention?

Let’s talk about pie.

Hello! Grace here, fancypants wedding party helper extraordinaire, and I will be speaking to you today about pies, the making of, for my lovely sister’s lovely wedding. I plan to make at least two pies (more if the occasion calls for it), one with pastry crust and one with graham cracker crust, because to be perfectly honest I don’t much care for traditional pastry pies and I intend to, selfishly, supply the wedding with a pie that I’m capable of eating entirely by myself. Although I won’t, because that would be rude. I will just think about it a lot and salivate quietly.

The wedding will take place at 3pm on Sunday, August 15th, and I will likely be trekking up to the North Country on the Thursday or Friday preceding. Likely this means that the pie crusts, at the very least, will need to be made ahead and frozen on the day I leave. The fillings should also be made as much ahead and in the most portable way possible, so this too needs to be considered.

Right now, I’ve pretty much only decided on one:

Chocolate Cream Pie (only with a graham cracker crust)

AWESOME.

The other runners-up are things like fresh blueberry-lemon pie (fresh blueberries cooked until slightly like blueberry jam, than placed in a graham cracker crust), apple cranberry pie, strawberry rhubarb pie (but rhubarb is out of season! D:), and sweet cherry pie. My fiance, Josh, recommends that I make as many chocolate pies as possible and then give all of them to him, but I didn’t find that advice terribly helpful.

So tell me, internet, what type of pie would you like to eat at a wedding?
